Spider Vein Treatment

Spider vein therapy (sclerotherapy) is for people seeking to treat spider veins that may have developed for a variety of reasons, including heredity and pregnancy.

Spider veins are tiny red, blue and purple blood vessels commonly found in the legs. Spider veins may appear individually or in a cluster that resembles a bruise. They can be distinguished from varicose veins which are more prominent, appear bluish-green and sometimes bulge through the skin.

Sclerotherapy uses a solution that is injected into the spider veins, causing them to shrink and disappear. The procedure, performed in our office, is virtually painless and does not entail any downtime. You can return to work or your day’s other activities immediately after leaving the office.

Typically, one treatment will be enough to correct spider veins; although patient experiences vary. However, it is possible that veins will reappear after the initial treatment or simply become smaller and lighter in color. Treatment success is typically reviewed one month after your initial treatment is performed. Additional treatments may be required depending on the initial treatment’s outcome and your desired result.

Sclerotherapy introduces a special solution into the targeted veins via a tiny, fine needle. The solution brings about the collapse of the vein, damaging the lining inside the vein causing the blood to clot. Once this happens, the treated veins are gradually absorbed by the body.

At the beginning of the treatment you will feel an initial sensation from the insertion of the needle. There may be a slight discomfort during treatment but most patients report minimal discomfort. As with all treatments, discomfort varies from patient to patient.

The most common side effects include tenderness, redness, itching and swelling at the injection site(s). Bruising is also a potential side effect. A complete list of side effects will be outlined during your consultation.

Compression garments may be purchased on your own prior to treatment. In order to receive optimal results, we recommend that compression garments be worn during the day for 7 to 14 days after treatment of spider veins, depending on the amount of veins treated and their location.
We recommend patients avoid heavy exercise, hot baths, saunas, and long plane flights after treatment for at least 2 weeks unless otherwise advised by our office.
Treatment cost will be determined at the time of the consultation. Your unique condition will be evaluated at the time of consultation and a quote for treatment will be given, ensuring you the best overall value.
